City on track with refurbishment of Fisherman’s Lane

The City of Cape
Town’s Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and
Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews visited the Fisherman’s Lane precinct
located at Strandfontein Pavilion yesterday, to see the progress the team has
made with the refurbishment of the area. The upgrade project, which includes
the removal of the damaged road and seawall, the provision of a new access road
to link the parking areas and the construction of new recreational facilities,
is anticipated to be complete at the end of September 2023.
'I am happy to see the progress the team has made with the removal of the broken infrastructure at Fisherman's Lane and the relocation of the bulk infrastructure. The main purpose of the refurbishment project is to upgrade the deteriorated coastal infrastructure and to overhaul the existing facilities and access routes which have deteriorated significantly over the past few years. We look forward to the end result of this project and believe the space will serve the community far better once completed,' said the City's Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews.
Furthermore, the project team has also completed the gabion revetment that will now protect the seaside edge of the western car park.
The major construction work currently in progress includes the following:
- Rock revetment (that will be extended along the eastern parking area will include a beach access stairway)
- The concrete staircase
- Access road from the eastern to western parking area
The project team has also commenced with a search and rescue operation for the plants that are required for the dune stabilisation aspect of the project.
'A number of other improvements will be made. These include the upgrading of the braai and picnic facilities and a walkway that will be installed to improve access for visitors. The recreational area will be landscaped using the natural vegetation found in the area and we will install play equipment and an irrigation system. These upgrades will create a functional and aesthetically pleasing pavilion area that will bring lots of joy to visitors.
'The reconstruction of the Fisherman's Lane precinct is an exciting development that will see this iconic coastal facility restored and upgraded for our local communities. The City is well aware that Fisherman's Lane is an important recreational landmark and that many residents have fond memories of time spent there. This is one of our efforts to restoring and upgrading coastal infrastructure for the benefit of the community,' said Alderman Andrews.
